The International Standard ISO 14001 is the most widely used environmental management standard. It sets out the requirements for an effective environmental management system that enables the Organization to develop and implement policies and objectives taking into account the legal requirements and information on important environmental aspects.
The success of an Environmental Management System (EMS) depends on the involvement of the staff of all levels and functions of the organization and, in particular, on the commitment of the top management. Environmental Management Systems (EMS) enable an organization to establish an environmental policy, environmental objectives and targets to achieve policy commitments, and take appropriate actions to improve environmental performance. The overall objective of ISO 14001 is to promote environmental protection and pollution prevention while addressing the satisfaction of socio-economic needs.
ISO 14001 is the basis for the implementation of other environmental certification schemes as well, such as the Community Ecological Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). In addition, it is designed to be compatible with other management system standards, such as the ISO 9001, so that different management systems can be integrated into a single integrated management system.
