Lefkara Laces
The tradition of embroidery in Lefkara dates to the 14th century. The embroideries are influenced by local techniques, embroideries of Venetian nobles (under whose rule the island was until the 16th century), ancient Greek and Byzantine geometric motifs and Lefkara laces or lefkaritiko reflect the aesthetic and socio-economic values of the village.

In 2009, Lefkara lace or lefkaritiko was included in the UNESCO World Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage and in 2015, the National Technical Committee for Standardization CYS/TC21 prepared the National Standard CYS 400, which aims to define the Cyprus Lefkara lace or lefkaritiko to preserve the tradition and distinguish authentic handmade lefkara lace from other types of lace.
Based on the market's need to distinguish authentic handmade laces and the Standard, CyCert has developed a Regulation for the Certification of Authentic Lefkara lace or lefkaritiko, which will enable the certification of authentic lace.
The Stages for the lace assessment and certification are the following:
1. Delivery of the lace with an application form to CyCert’s offices
2. Evaluation of the lace by the Certification Committee
3. Certification and marking of laces as authentic
